Sequence of Tenses वह नियम है जिसमें English sentences में main clause और subordinate clause के tenses एक-दूसरे से logically जुड़े होते हैं। जब एक वाक्य में दो actions होती हैं- एक मुख्य और एक उस पर निर्भर, तो main clause का tense subordinate clause के tense को decide करता है, ताकि पूरा sentence अर्थ और समय के हिसाब से clear रहे। उदाहरण के लिए, अगर main clause past tense में है (“He said”), तो subordinate clause भी generally past tense में जाता है (“that he was coming”). इसी तरह, reported speech, thoughts, beliefs, hopes या conditions वाले वाक्यों में tense harmony रखना जरूरी होता है। आगे दिए गए examples और Rules यह दिखाते हैं कि “that, so that, because, who” जैसे connectors वाले complex sentences में English में समय की consistency कैसे maintain की जाती है।
THE SEQUENCE OF TENSES: पहिचान और अनुवाद के नियम
Sequence of Tenses का अर्थ है- काल का अनुक्रम। इस सिद्धान्त से ज्ञात होता है कि Principal Clause के उपरान्त आने वाली Subordinate Clause (आश्रित उपवाक्य) का प्रयोग किस प्रकार होता है।
Rule 1. यदि Principal Clause की क्रिया Present या Future Tense में है तो आश्रित उपवाक्य की क्रिया वाक्य के भाव के अनुसार किसी भी Tense में हो सकती है।
1. मैं जानता हूँ कि तुम्हारी माताजी बीमार हैं।
I know that your mother is ill.
2. हमें ज्ञात है कि तुम्हारे पिताजी कल बीमार थे।
We know that your father was ill yesterday.
3. उसका विचार है कि रमेश आज गाजियाबाद में है।
He thinks that Ramesh is in Ghaziabad today.
4. उसका विचार है कि अब्दुल्ला कल गाजियाबाद में था।
He thinks that Abdulla was in Ghaziabad yesterday.
5. उसका विचार है कि राजन कल गाजियाबाद में होगा।
He thinks that Rajan will be in Ghaziabad tomorrow.
Rule 2. यदि Principal Clause की क्रिया Past Tense में है तो आश्रित उपवाक्य (Subordinate Clause) की क्रिया भी Past Tense में ही होती है।
6. हमीद को ज्ञात था कि तुम्हारे पिताजी बीमार हैं।
Hamid knew that your father was ill.
अपवाद (Exception): नियम 2 निम्नलिखित दशा में लागू नहीं होता है-
(i) यदि आश्रित उपवाक्य द्वारा Universal Truth (सामान्य सत्य) या Habitual Action (स्वाभाविक कार्य) प्रकट हो रहा है तो Noun Clause (संज्ञा उपवाक्य) की क्रिया Present Indefinite Tense में ही होगी चाहे Principal Clause की क्रिया Past Tense में ही क्यों न हो।
7 . मास्टर साहब ने हमें बताया था कि सूर्य पूरब में निकलता है।
The teacher told us that the sun rises in the east.
(ii) Than के प्रयोग में Adverb Clause of Comparison भाव के अनुसार किसी भी Tense में प्रयुक्त हो सकती है।
8. वह तुम्हें मुझसे अधिक चाहता था।
He liked you better than he likes me.
Adverb Clause of Purpose में May का प्रयोग होगा यदि Principal Clause-Simple Present में है।
9. हम भोजन करते हैं ताकि जीवित रहें।
We eat that we may live. (We eat so that we may live.)
यदि Principal Clause-Simple Past में है तो Adverb Clause of Purpose में Might का प्रयोग होगा।
10. वह कमरे में गया ताकि पत्र लिख सके।
He went into the room that (= so that) he might write a letter.
